15. Steve Lacy, ‘Gemini Rights’

Genre: Alternative R&B

“Gemini scope give me depth ‘til I’m dead / But I can’t seem to get the fuck out of my head”

Look beyond “Bad Habit”, one of the most viral hits of the summer and enter Gemini Rights, Steve Lacy’s sensual sophomore record. Like a crisp summer breeze blowing past gently, the cohesive ten-track album makes for perfect listening on a lazy afternoon. From airy falsettos to silky harmonies, Lacy’s vocals are more polished than ever, dripping over the album’s dynamic production of funk, jazz, and neo soul. The 24-year-old laments for a lost love, and consequently turns his grief into an avenue to explore and assert his personal identity. In the album’s closing track “Give You the World”, Lacy croons “I’ll give you the world”, which eventually changes to “I gave you the world” at the end. It’s a switch that is equal parts heartbreaking and powerful, neatly summing up the internal complexities of Gemini Rights.

// Highlights: “Static”, “Mercury”, “Bad Habit”

14. NIKI, ‘Nicole’
